Some posts from Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 users have brought allegations of wrist irritation with the new models back to the agenda. Users sharing their experiences on social media state that they are experiencing a burning sensation, redness, and discomfort, particularly in the area where the sensor region on the back of the watch makes contact.
At the center of the complaints is the sensor section of the watches that touches the wrist. Design elements in the new models, such as more frequent heart rate measurements, a larger ECG electrode surface, ring-shaped photodiodes, and larger green LEDs, are notable. However, it is not known whether any of these changes are directly causing the irritation.
Allegations of wrist irritation caused by the Apple Watch are not new. Since the first Apple Watch models, some users have expressed experiencing redness, itching, or discomfort due to friction on the skin during prolonged use.
Apple's user manual states that skin reactions can occur for various reasons. According to the company, this may be related to allergies or sensitivity to the materials used, sweat or soap residue in contact with the skin, or the strap being worn too tightly or too loosely.
SOME USERS ARE RETURNING THEIR DEVICES
Apple states that a small number of users may react to nickel or trace amounts of acrylates and methacrylates, but that these possibilities are taken into account in the watch and strap design. The company also recommends keeping the watch, strap, and skin clean and dry, especially after exercise or after contact with substances such as sweat, soap, sunscreen, and lotion.
Some users say their complaints decreased after getting used to wearing the watch, while others say that regularly cleaning the back of the watch and the strap alleviated the problem. Conversely, there are also users who state that they have returned their devices. Apple advises those who experience redness, swelling, itching, or any other sign of irritation to consult a doctor before wearing the watch again.
