They are testing unmanned surface platforms for port defense
Russia is developing new floating platforms equipped with remote-controlled weapon systems to protect its sea ports and sensitive maritime facilities against unmanned surface threats.
Russia has turned to new technologies to strengthen port security against the recent increase in unmanned maritime vehicle attacks. The innovative platforms, referred to as "Plot-40" and "Plot-47," differ from classic boats by having a rectangular structure approximately 4.5 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, elevated on four large buoys. These platforms do not carry their own engines; they serve as fixed defense points by being towed to the required areas by other vessels.
The most striking feature of the platforms is that they are equipped with a remotely controlled heavy-caliber weapon system. Experts state that, in light of the available images, this weapon system could be a 12.7 or 20-millimeter automatic weapon. Furthermore, supported by various sensors used to monitor the surrounding area and detect targets, these platforms take on both attack and surveillance missions.
The hull design features windows opening in four different directions, and the seating areas inside allow personnel to serve on the platform when necessary. However, thanks to the remotely operated weapon, it appears possible for these platforms to be used without personnel as well.
These floating structures are not activated on their own. Their primary purpose is to be deployed around port entrances, anchorage areas, and strategic maritime infrastructure to provide fixed defense and surveillance points. Thus, a more economical solution is offered without the need to constantly assign expensive and large warships to port protection.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FLOATING PLATFORM SYSTEMS
Increasing threats from unmanned maritime vehicles have led Russian authorities to develop new defense strategies. Through such small, fixed, and armed platforms, the goal is to remotely detect and rapidly intervene against small and fast vehicles approaching the port. Despite their low costs, the systems have a significant vulnerability: these platforms, which are unarmored and lack their own engines, cannot change their positions when targeted. They carry the risk of remaining defenseless in the event of a direct attack.
This new defense mechanism of Russia is currently in the testing phase, and it is not yet known whether it will be widely used in ports and maritime facilities across the country. Defense experts are of the opinion that the system could become more widespread depending on the future development of the platforms and their success in the field.
It is anticipated that the floating armed platforms could be used in the future in ports of high strategic importance, particularly along the Black Sea coast. In this way, the goal is to initiate a new era in defense against unmanned maritime vehicles.
