TikTok issues statement following US ban attempt

TikTok has warned that the US attempt to ban the social media platform would violate the freedom of expression rights of millions of Americans.

According to a report by the BBC, a TikTok spokesperson condemned the approval of the bill that would ban the platform in the US House of Representatives.

While warning that the US attempt to ban TikTok violates the freedom of expression rights of 170 million Americans, the spokesperson argued that shutting down the platform, which contributes 24 billion dollars annually to the US economy, would harm 7 million businesses.

The US House of Representatives passed the bill paving the way for a ban on TikTok in the country on March 13, and the bill was sent to the Senate for approval.

US President Joe Biden had announced that if the Senate approves it, he would sign the bill into law.

If the bill, which paves the way for banning TikTok on the grounds that it "poses a national security concern," becomes law, its parent company, the Chinese firm ByteDance, will be forced to divest the platform.
