Automatic transmission dominance grows in repair shops: Maintenance warning from mechanic Osman San
Eskişehir-based mechanic Osman San stated that automatic transmissions are becoming more widespread and emphasized that regular maintenance is critical to reducing costs.
The increasing preference for automatic transmission vehicles due to their ease of use is also reflected in the maintenance and repair traffic at industrial sites. In Eskişehir, vehicle mechanic Osman San said that a significant portion of the vehicles coming to his shop recently are automatic.
According to San, automotive companies are also reducing the production of manual transmission vehicles in line with the shift in user preferences. Stating that drivers are turning to automatic transmissions, especially for city driving, San said, "Automatic vehicles are now preferred. Manual transmission vehicles used to be produced more. Recently, there has been a shift toward automatic vehicles."
Expressing that automatic transmissions have also become more attractive for new drivers, San said, "Automatic transmission is preferred for its ease of use. They are not releasing manual transmissions in new vehicles. This is due to the consumer's shift toward automatic. Even those who are just starting to drive a vehicle are learning with an automatic transmission."
MAINTENANCE COST WARNING
San drew attention to the fact that automatic transmission vehicles require regular maintenance. Explaining that some malfunctions in manual vehicles can be resolved with more limited interventions, San emphasized that oil changes and adjustments in automatic transmissions should not be neglected at specific mileage intervals.
"Compared to manual, automatic is more costly," said San, noting that this situation is also entirely linked to user habits. Stating that shifting to neutral during long waits can protect the transmission, San said, "If you shift from D to N during long waits, not at every traffic light, the transmission will not be strained or overheat."
Arguing that automatic transmission vehicles also find buyers faster in the second-hand market, San gave an example from his own experience. Stating that two of the three vehicles he has are automatic and one is manual, San explained that the automatic vehicles were sold despite having higher mileage, while the manual vehicle with lower mileage and in clean condition remained unsold.
San also said that automatic transmission vehicles can provide advantages in terms of fuel consumption depending on the driving style. Pointing out that the vehicle adjusts its own RPM and speed, San commented, "The vehicle adjusts its own RPM and the speed it will travel, shifting gears without straining. The fuel consumption of an automatic is lower compared to a manual."
The Eskişehir-based mechanic stated that automatic transmission vehicles are comfortable and practical when used correctly; however, if the maintenance schedule is neglected, they can incur higher costs compared to manual vehicles.
