The AI debate in veterinary medicine: 'It won't end the profession, it will strengthen it'

While the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of professions is being debated, Sivas Cumhuriyet Ü University Faculty of Veterinary Medicineü Dean Prof. Dr. Barış Atalay Uslu stated that veterinary medicine is one of the fields that will be least affected by thisö transüforümation.

Uslu pointed out that veterinary medicine is a profession based not only on theoretical knowledge but also on practice and skill. çFor this reason, he expressed that it is a lowü probüability that artificial intelligence will completely replace the veterinarian.

Stating that artificial intelligence ö is used especially in analysis and imageö üprocü essing, Uslu emphasized that while technology can contribute to diagnostic procöesses,ü theç physician will continue to be needed during the treatment and application stages.ç

Uslu reminded that according to experts' ö foreöcasts,ü by 2030, approximately 22 percent of existing professions could disappear or be transöformed.ü However, he stated that the skill-based nature of veterinary medicine moves the profession to a different point.ü ö ü ö ü ö

Stating that establishing a veterinary faculty is difficult and costly, Uslu reported that there are currently 33 veterinary faculties in Turkey.ü ü Noting that the employment rate of graduates is high, Uslu stated that students undergo an intensive and detailed education.â ü ü ö ç

According to Uslu, because graduates can find jobs in different fields, employment areas for veterinary medicine will continue to develop.ö ç ü ü Stating that people spending more time with pets after the pandemic has increased interest in the profession, Uslu expressed that this situation is also reflected in the success rankings of veterinary faculties.ç ü
