WhatsApp ban in US Congress: App removed due to security concerns

The US House of Representatives administration has banned the use of the WhatsApp application on all devices used by Congressional staff for work purposes. Internal communications stated that it is strictly prohibited for employees to have WhatsApp on mobile, desktop, or web browser versions. It was requested that the application be removed immediately from any devices where it is currently installed.

POSES SECURITY RISKS

In an assessment conducted by the Office of Cybersecurity, it was stated that WhatsApp does not offer sufficient transparency in protecting user data, that its data encryption is inadequate, and that it poses various security risks. For this reason, the application has been classified as "high risk." Additionally, employees were warned to be cautious against identity theft and messages from unknown numbers.

ALTERNATIVES HIGHLIGHTED

Microsoft Teams, Wickr, Signal, iMessage, and FaceTime were recommended as alternative applications that can be used in place of WhatsApp. The House of Representatives has recently imposed partial bans on DeepSeek and ByteDance applications to increase data security and has restricted the use of Microsoft Copilot. Furthermore, Congressional staff are only permitted to use ChatGPT via the paid ChatGPT Plus version.

These steps are among the latest measures taken to ensure digital security and protect sensitive information within Congress.
