World record broken with 'miracle material'
Researchers have achieved a breakthrough using a substance dubbed a "miracle material" to increase the efficiency of solar panels.
A team from the Chinese solar technology firm Longi has set a new world record of 33.9 percent for a silicon-perovskite tandem solar cell, surpassing the previous record set by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia in May of this year.
The new efficiency record also broke the 33.7 percent theoretical limit of standard single-junction cells found in commercial solar panels for the first time.

In a company statement reported by Independent Türkçe, it was stated, "This record provides meaningful experimental data to demonstrate the advantage of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells over crystalline silicon single-junction solar cells in terms of efficiency."
The emergence of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem technology has paved a new way for the development of next-generation high-efficiency solar cell technology. This means that the same area absorbing the same light can emit more electricity.
The theoretical efficiency limit of silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells is 43 percent, but achieving this level on a commercial scale is unlikely.
With researchers from Nanjing University announcing earlier this year that a design breakthrough has made mass production possible, the first production of ultra-efficient perovskite solar panels could begin in China.

According to researchers, the next-generation panels will be 50 percent cheaper and 50 percent more efficient than traditional silicon cells, but their efficiency rates will still be far from the levels reached in the laboratory.
The British startup Oxford PV, founded by the University of Oxford, has entered the process of commercializing the technology with the hope of starting large-scale production at a German facility later this year.
Oxford PV's Chief Technology Officer Chris Case told The Independent in August, "Current silicon solar panels have reached their physical limits. With perovskite, we have found a way to transform the efficiency of these solar cells."
"The biggest challenge so far is durability and reliability. We already have great efficiency (much more than current silicon cells), so most of our research and development is spent on increasing reliability, not efficiency."

Perovskite is receiving praise for its potential to revolutionize everything from high-speed telecommunications to renewable energy technologies, which is why it is called a "miracle material."
The potential of perovskite for solar panels is not limited to efficiency gains compared to traditional silicon cells; it also includes new ways of using them.
Recent breakthroughs include self-healing solar panels that can maintain their efficiency for decades to centuries, as well as bifacial solar panels that can generate electricity from solar energy on both sides.
The material can also be used in various applications, from building-integrated solar panels to space-based power generation.
