Scandalous decision from UEFA: A slap on the wrist for Viktoria Plzen after racist banner at Fenerbahçe match

Fenerbahçe drew 0-0 away against Viktoria Plzen in the 4th week of the UEFA Europa League. The banner reading "One must fight the Turks," which was unfurled by the Czech team's fans behind the goal, had caused a stir.

UEFA decided to fine Viktoria Plzen 15,000 euros for the racist and/or discriminatory behavior of its fans and ordered a partial closure of its stadium for the next UEFA club competition match it hosts. The decision to close a section of the stadium was suspended for a probationary period of 2 years.

UEFA fined Fenerbahçe a total of 78,000 euros regarding the events that took place during the match. 

UEFA explained the fines imposed on Fenerbahçe item by item as follows:

"- To fine Fenerbahçe SK 15,000 euros and to ban Fenerbahçe SK from selling tickets to away fans for its next (1) UEFA competition match due to the racist and/or discriminatory behavior of its fans. The ban on selling tickets to away fans is suspended for a probationary period of two (2) years from the date of this decision.

- To fine Fenerbahçe SK 15,500 euros for acts of damage.

- Fenerbahçe SK must contact the host club, Viktoria Plzen, within 30 days to settle the damages caused by its fans, namely damaged seats and graffiti on the walls.

- To fine Fenerbahçe SK 15,000 euros for lighting fireworks.

- To fine Fenerbahçe SK 25,000 euros for throwing objects.

- To fine Fenerbahçe SK 8,000 euros for the improper conduct of its team."
