100-year partnership declaration from Canada and Ukraine: Defense, energy, and technology cooperation stand out

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have signed a declaration containing the goal of a “100-year partnership” between the two countries. In his statement following the signing ceremony, Carney noted that the agreement is based not only on the current needs of the war in Ukraine but also on a longer-term perspective of cooperation.

Stating, “I have just signed a 100-year partnership declaration with President Zelenskyy,” Carney said that a more comprehensive framework covering defense, trade, investment, energy, reconstruction, and technology would be formalized in the coming weeks.

The Canadian Prime Minister also drew attention to the historical and social ties between the city of Calgary and Ukraine. Carney stated that more than 350 thousand Canadians of Ukrainian descent live in the province of Alberta, where Calgary is located.

UAV PRODUCTION AND LONG-TERM COOPERATION

In Carney’s statement, the field of defense, particularly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), was one of the prominent topics. Stating that they are carrying out the largest defense move of the last 70 years within the scope of the goal of a “strong, secure, and safe Canada,” Carney said that UAVs would play a central role in this process.

Noting that there are approximately 2 thousand UAVs in the Canadian Armed Forces inventory, Carney emphasized that this number will need to increase significantly in the coming years. He reminded that the Canadian government launched the Defense UAV Initiative earlier this year to increase domestic production.

Following the declaration, Canada and Ukraine aim for long-term cooperation in many areas, including defense.

Carney also announced that a national UAV marketplace has been established in line with the plan to create the capacity to produce millions of UAVs within two years. It was reported that this system would directly connect military units with approximately 400 Canadian suppliers.

The declaration aims to establish a permanent foundation for Canada-Ukraine relations, not only for the support Ukraine needs during the war process but also in areas of post-war reconstruction and economic cooperation.
