Allegations of sabotage at defense facilities in Europe

Western intelligence sources have brought to the fore allegations that Russia is targeting the European defense industry with covert sabotage acts that remain below the threshold of triggering NATO's direct response mechanism. According to the allegations, the fires and explosions in recent weeks at several factories providing military equipment and ammunition to Ukraine are part of a broader "hybrid warfare" strategy aimed at weakening support for Kyiv.

According to reports in the British press, the suspicious incidents are being kept below the threshold that would trigger Article 5, NATO's collective defense clause. For this reason, although the attacks cannot be directly linked to Russia, security and intelligence agencies in Europe have gone on high alert.

SUSPICIOUS FIRES AT DEFENSE FACTORIES

One of the recent incidents occurred in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. A fire broke out on August 15 at a building belonging to Milrem Robotics, which supplies unmanned ground vehicles to the Ukrainian army. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced that an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was sabotage and if there is a Russian connection.

Latvian authorities, in connection with the same incident, detained three Latvian citizens on suspicion of "providing assistance to a foreign state operating against another state."

Similar suspicious incidents have been recorded in different parts of Europe. In Bulgaria, an explosion occurred on August 10 following a fire in a parked truck at a facility belonging to EMCO, a private arms company that produces 155 mm artillery ammunition for Ukraine. Three days later in Italy, a fire and explosion occurred in the gunpowder processing section of the KNDS Ammo Italy ammunition factory in Colleferro, near Rome.

Earlier in the year, four suspects were detained in the Czech Republic following a fire at a facility producing drones, while six people were arrested in Lithuania in connection with an attempt to burn down a factory producing radio wave scanners.

LOCAL NETWORKS AND CRYPTO PAYMENT ALLEGATIONS

In intelligence assessments, it is alleged that the Russian military intelligence agency GRU is contacting local criminal networks via applications like Telegram instead of sending agents directly into the field. According to the claim, tasks are distributed through intermediaries, payments are made via cryptocurrency, and some individuals participating in the acts are believed to be unaware that they are working on behalf of Russia.

Normunds Mezviets, head of the Latvian State Security Service, stated that GRU members avoid taking operational risks, saying, "In our experience, we do not see GRU officers physically traveling to our country. No, they stay in Russia, where it is safe."

Within NATO, it is assessed that such acts aim to create divisions within the alliance. While Poland and the Baltic countries want a tougher stance against Moscow, it is noted that some Western European countries are acting more cautiously regarding directly blaming Russia to avoid escalating tensions.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the suspicious sabotage attempts as "dangerous and irresponsible," emphasizing that the alliance's response must be "clear, swift, and decisive." A statement from NATO also reported that resilience against hybrid acts will be increased and that malicious activities against allies will continue to be monitored.
