Brazilian police investigate claims that Flávio Bolsonaro fled to the US after election defeat

The Brazilian Federal Police are investigating whether Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, left the country following the presidential election defeat on Sunday. The police have contacted Argentine authorities to clarify allegations that Bolsonaro attempted to travel to the US via an airport in Argentina.

According to a report by the newspaper Metrópoles, which cited police sources, Flávio Bolsonaro, the candidate for the Liberal Party (PL), did not pass through official border control points in Brazil after losing the election to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. However, the same sources noted that the possibility that Bolsonaro may have crossed the border without undergoing inspection is also being evaluated.

The Argentina-based outlet Infobae claimed that Bolsonaro arrived in the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazú at 02:00 on Tuesday using his Brazilian ID card. The report alleged that he was preparing to fly to the US from there by private jet. It was reported that the aircraft in question was a Gulfstream G400, registration number LV-JQW, belonging to the company Baires Fly SA, and that the company had initiated customs procedures for four passengers and three crew members.

According to UOL columnist Letícia Casado, some individuals in Bolsonaro's inner circle tried to reach him starting early Tuesday morning but were unsuccessful. Conversely, Rogério Marinho, the general coordinator of Bolsonaro's election campaign, denied the allegations. In a statement to Metrópoles, Marinho said, "He has not left the country." The Argentine government also denied the allegations.

PASSPORT DECISION STRENGTHENED ALLEGATIONS

The escape allegations surfaced after Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports to the Federal Police. It was stated in his meeting with his lawyers that Bolsonaro would comply with the decision and hand over the documents to authorities on Tuesday morning. However, it was reported that the passports have not yet been surrendered.

Following the announcement of the election results, Flávio Bolsonaro refused to recognize Lula da Silva's victory, arguing that it was "impossible" to accept the result and that the election should be annulled. Later, he stated that he would "organize the opposition." In a video message he released on Monday, he also stated that he was prohibited from leaving Brazil and that he had been served a notice to surrender his passports.

US President Donald Trump also claimed on Monday that the elections in Brazil appeared "rigged," but he did not provide any evidence to support this claim. In a statement to reporters, Trump described the voting as "terrible" and "like another rigged election."

Political and legal pressure on the Bolsonaro family had increased after Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to prison by the Federal Supreme Court in a case linked to his attempts to invalidate the 2022 election results. Flávio Bolsonaro's brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, has been living in the US since 2025.
