Death toll and number of missing rise in Brazil floods

In Brazil, the toll from the floods that struck the Rio Grande do Sul state on May 1 continues to rise. The number of people who lost their lives in the floods caused by heavy rainfall has increased to 75.

State officials stated that 103 people are still missing and warned that the death toll could rise further.

The floods destroyed roads and bridges in many cities, triggered landslides, and caused the partial collapse of a dam at a small hydroelectric power plant.

The water level in Guaiba Lake in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul state, rose by more than two meters, reaching the highest level on record.

All flights at the airport in Porto Alegre have been suspended since last Friday.
