Israel's 'October 7' retaliation: Severe sanctions and penalties imposed on Palestinian prisoners

It has been reported that Israel has been imposing severe sanctions and penalties on Palestinian prisoners in its jails since October 7, when it began bombing Gaza.

In a statement from the Palestinian Prisoners' Society, it was noted that since Israel launched its attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip, its treatment of Palestinians in prisons has turned into "a form of revenge and torture."

The statement noted that electricity in the prisons is cut off between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and that all electronic devices, including water and food heaters, have been confiscated.

The statement also expressed that hot water has been cut off, forcing prisoners to shower with cold water.

It was noted that the Israel Prison Service has introduced new practices such as "reducing yard time to 20 minutes or sometimes denying it altogether, increasing the number of inmates in cells from 5 to 9, and closing kitchens to provide only two simple meals a day."

The statement further indicated that some prisoners who have completed their "sentence period" are not being allowed to be released and are instead being placed under "administrative detention" status.

"ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION" PENALTY

Israel's "administrative detention" practice means detaining Palestinians in occupied territories without any charges being brought against them.

Palestinians can be imprisoned for up to 6 months without learning the charges against them and without the right to defend themselves.

After this period, the detention period of a Palestinian who is referred to a military court but remains unaware of the charges can be extended repeatedly for up to 5 years.
