Magnus Tumi Gudmunsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland, stated that the pressure accumulated over centuries had shattered the Earth's crust in a major eruption, causing magma to spill out.
Speaking to the Associated Press, a town resident stated that their home was not damaged in the volcanic eruption, but that some of their neighbors had lost their homes.
ABOUT THE VOLCANIC ERUPTION
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) had noted in a statement that the volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula erupted on December 18.
Vidir Reynisson, an official from the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, had stated in an interview with the national broadcaster RUV that the event was "a major eruption" for the region, referring to the magma flow.
'STATE OF EMERGENCY' HAD BEEN DECLARED
A "state of emergency" had been declared on November 11 due to the possibility of a volcanic eruption following a series of earthquakes in Iceland.
Authorities had issued an evacuation order as a precaution in the town of Grindavik, located in the southwest of the country.
