Poland closes doors to US nuclear warhead plans

Following high-level meetings held in Brussels, Polish Deputy Minister of National Defense Pawel Zalewski evaluated the latest developments regarding his country's military cooperation with the US. Zalewski spoke to the Polish press after his meeting with Elbridge Colby from the US Department of Defense.

Clearly rejecting the claims that occasionally surface regarding the US deploying nuclear warheads on Polish soil, Zalewski emphasized that the Polish administration does not view this proposal favorably. Stressing that his country is determined to play an active role in NATO's nuclear deterrence strategy, Zalewski stated that this strategic participation does not require the presence of nuclear weapons in Poland.

The Deputy Defense Minister stated, "Poland continues to contribute to NATO's collective defense policies and deterrence strategies. However, we are against the deployment of nuclear warheads on our territory."

Making statements regarding other dimensions of military relations, Zalewski noted that negotiations are ongoing regarding bases and regions to be allocated for a more permanent presence of US troops in the country, and that positive progress has been made in this regard.

Thus, the Warsaw administration has taken a clear stance in the debates regarding the potential deployment of nuclear weapons, while clearly demonstrating that its military partnership with the US in the field of security continues to be deepened in other areas.
