Trump offers 'extra time' to TikTok

U.S. President-elect Trump made statements regarding the TikTok ban during a phone-in program on NBC News.

Trump stated that he would likely grant TikTok a 90-day extension to comply with the relevant law, which requires the social media app to be shut down in the U.S. unless it is sold to a U.S. firm by its China-based parent company.

"A 90-day extension will likely happen; I think that is an appropriate step," said Trump, adding that he would likely announce his decision on January 20, the day he takes office.

The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday upheld the enforcement of the law that mandates the Chinese social media platform TikTok be banned in the U.S. if it is not sold.

The court stated, "Congress has determined that a divestiture is necessary to address national security concerns regarding TikTok's data collection practices and its relationship with a foreign adversary."

According to the decision, which was upheld unanimously, if the social media app is not sold by January 19, when the decision takes effect, it will be removed from platforms such as Google and Apple, and the downloading of the app onto devices such as phones and tablets will be blocked after that date.
