US court issues stay on Trump's Harvard decision

Boston District Judge Allison Burroughs has halted the implementation of a presidential executive order in a lawsuit filed by Harvard University against the Trump administration, stating that the university could suffer "immediate and irreparable harm." The executive order had proposed imposing restrictions on the visas of foreign students seeking to study at Harvard.

Harvard administration had appealed to the judiciary, arguing that the executive order signed on June 5, which suspended the admission of new foreign students entering the US on F, M, or J type visas, was unlawful.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THREATS AGAINST UNIVERSITIES

The Trump administration had threatened to freeze federal funding for many universities, including Harvard, due to pro-Palestine demonstrations and diversity programs. During this process, the Department of Justice and other federal agencies established an "Antisemitism Task Force" aimed at taking measures against such activities.

It had been decided to freeze the 2.2 billion dollar funding and 60 million dollar contract value provided to Harvard, and the university had taken this decision to court.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem had notified Harvard in a letter that the admission of international students had been suspended. However, Judge Burroughs announced that she has also temporarily stayed this decision.
