The status quo in the vehicle market has been broken! Turkey's new car preference has been revealed
According to August 2026 data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the number of new vehicles registered to traffic decreased by 20.1 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 171,887. While the total number of registered vehicles in Turkey reached 34 million 911 thousand 879, gasoline and hybrid vehicles stood out in new car preferences.
August 2026 data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) indicated a decline in the number of newly registered vehicles. While 171,887 vehicles were registered to traffic throughout the month, this figure decreased by 20.1 percent compared to the same month last year.
With the new registrations, the total number of vehicles registered to traffic in Turkey reached 34 million 911 thousand 879. The activity in the second-hand market also continued in August; 917,143 vehicle transfers were carried out.
MOTORCYCLES RANK FIRST IN REGISTRATIONS
Motorcycles accounted for 47.5 percent of the vehicles registered to traffic in August. While cars ranked second with a 38.4 percent share, the share of light commercial vehicles was recorded at 9.6 percent.
On a monthly basis, new vehicle registrations fell by 17.2 percent. A 16.1 percent decrease was observed in car registrations, and an 18.2 percent decrease in motorcycle registrations. In contrast, minibus registrations increased by 12.2 percent compared to the previous month.
In the annual comparison, the decline in car registrations reached 30.5 percent. Motorcycle registrations fell by 13.6 percent, and light commercial vehicle registrations by 4.7 percent. An increase of 12.9 percent was recorded in bus registrations.
As of the end of August, cars made up 51.7 percent of the total vehicles in traffic. The share of motorcycles was 21.8 percent, and the share of light commercial vehicles was 14.3 percent.
In the same month, 66,048 new cars were registered to traffic. Looking at the brands, Renault ranked first with a 12.3 percent share. Renault was followed by Volkswagen with 8.5 percent and Hyundai with 8.4 percent. TOGG's share was 7.3 percent, while Toyota's share was 7.2 percent.
In the January-August period, the number of vehicles registered to traffic was 1 million 342 thousand 134. During this period, new registrations decreased by 14.1 percent compared to the same period last year. While 41,641 vehicles were deregistered from traffic in the same process, the total number of vehicles in traffic increased by 1 million 300 thousand 493.
In the eight-month period, 40.8 percent of the 600,859 cars registered to traffic consisted of gasoline vehicles, 32.1 percent were hybrid, and 18.1 percent were electric vehicles. The share of diesel cars remained at 7.8 percent, and the share of LPG cars remained at 1.2 percent.
Gray cars stood out in color preference. 41.5 percent of the cars registered in the January-August period were gray. The share of white cars was announced as 25.5 percent, and the share of black cars as 12 percent.
