DEM Party responds to 'Apo' slogans chanted in Parliament: 'The women said it themselves'
A slogan chanted in favor of terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan during the DEM Party Group Meeting held at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey has caused a stir in the parliamentary lobbies. In the first assessment from the DEM Party following the incident, it was stated that the slogan was chanted spontaneously by women who had come from outside.
As the new legislative year begins, significant developments are taking place in Parliament, and tensions rose yesterday when a group of women chanted "Biji Serok Apo" during the DEM Party Group Meeting. The incident has sparked a new debate between the government and the opposition in Parliament.
While it was stated that the women attending the meeting acted independently and that there was no direction given for the slogans chanted, the event was the subject of discussion in the TBMM lobbies throughout the day.
The development was also brought to the agenda of the National Brotherhood Commission established in Parliament. According to information obtained, TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş evaluated the events and pointed out that all parties should be more careful in similar situations. It was stated that Kurtulmuş remarked, "I wish such slogans had not been chanted."
In the first statement made by the DEM Party side, the view was expressed that, "The women who attended the Parliament wanted to chant slogans of their own volition. There was no direction from us."
The parliamentary agenda also included the debate on sending a delegation to İmralı, which MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli is alleged to view positively. However, in the latest assessment, it was stated that the decision regarding the delegation's visit would not be rushed and that the process would be expected to mature.
This latest development in the TBMM indicates that the tension in the new legislative term will be high.
