STONE IS HEAVY IN ITS PLACE-135. LET US NOT FORGET, LET US NOT LET BE FORGOTTEN.
In Western Anatolia, the people of Pergamon/Bergama built a magnificent city 2,200 years ago.
In addition to the magnificent Altar of Zeus, which could be considered the 8th Wonder of the World, they adorned every part of the high hill where the city was located, the Acropolis, with monuments and statues.
In the city, on the plateau in front of the area where the palaces and the library were located, above the plain where the Altar of Zeus stood, they had built a temple to Athena—who was believed at the time to be the goddess of wisdom and intelligence—even before the Altar of Zeus was constructed.
They also equipped the magnificent entrance (propylon) of this temple with statue-like reliefs/friezes containing mythological scenes.
The front facade of this magnificent structure was smuggled to Germany at the end of the 19th century by a smuggling network supported by the German state of that time, just like the Altar of Zeus;
One of the unique marble friezes that adorned the surroundings of the temple is also among those that were smuggled.
Although a part of this meaningful marble work has been damaged, the carvings on it have lost none of their eye-catching beauty.
In the image on the work, a woman sitting on a rock with a shield beside her feet on the left is talking to a man sitting higher up than her.
The woman's elegant clothing and cloak in the sculpture are worked with detail and meticulousness. This means she is noble.
The woman's serious posture and the man leaning toward her with his hands on his knees indicate that the man is telling the woman important things.
It is also clear from his appearance that the man is strong and powerful.
The woman and man depicted in the statue-like relief, the frieze, were placed on a marble slab measuring 87.5 x 84 x 20 cm with a unique aesthetic perspective.
Naturally, it was carved by the famous Pergamon/Bergama sculptors.
It is thought that the figures in this work, which was placed on the entrance walls of the temple of Athena—who is also considered the patron goddess of Pergamon—are connected to a legend regarding the founding of Pergamon.
It is estimated that the man in the image is Telephos, the son of Heracles (Hercules), the son of the chief god Zeus, in whose memory a magnificent altar was built, and who is considered the founder of Pergamon; and that the woman is his mother, Auge.
Mother and son are talking on the marble!
The man's face was smashed by fanatical Christians!
This work is now also a prisoner in the Berlin Museums/Prisons, like other Bergama artifacts.
Its conviction number is “Ident.Nr. AvP VII 358”.
What is interesting in the information provided by the museum/prison is the statement that it was discovered (by the German organized smuggling organization) in a wall built by the Byzantines to fortify the city walls:
The museum/prison's artifact introduction note writes exactly as follows:
(Fundort: Byzantinische Mauer (Turkey/Pergamon/Fortifications.)
(Location found: Byzantine Wall (Turkey/Bergama/Fortifications)
The Altar of Zeus and the magnificent Pergamon statues were destroyed by fanatical Christians who were against statues as a matter of faith (likely in the 6th century A.D.), and then the marble pieces of the demolished altar were used to strengthen the rampart walls (likely in the 8th century A.D.) to protect against Umayyad/Arab attacks.
This clearly shows that this work was not excavated from the ground, but was consciously torn from the wall by German smugglers, forcibly removed, and taken.
Moreover, by destroying the historical rampart walls that are necessary to be protected for today.
With the statement above, the current German Museum/Prison authorities in Berlin are also clearly declaring that they were damaged/destroyed.
They are confessing to the wrong committed a century ago.
On the other hand, if the Bergama artifacts and this marble frieze had not been smuggled from Bergama by the German smuggling network led by Carl Humann, “that marble frieze” would have remained on the wall of the Bergama Castle, and before long, the Republic of Turkey, which came after, would have taken it under protection.
It is seen that the theft gang was so determined in the robbery they committed that just as they dug up and stole what was underground, they also tore off and took what was on the walls.
They left nothing behind.
It is time for all smuggled artifacts, along with this beautiful marble, to be returned to Bergama. Along with those smuggled from other parts of Anatolia.
This shame must be rectified!
No asset should be torn from its homeland.
Human conscience and morality require this.
THE ZEUS ALTAR AND BERGAMA SCULPTURES DO NOT BELONG TO COLD AND FOGGY BERLIN, BUT TO BEAUTIFUL BERGAMA. THEY MUST ABSOLUTELY COME BACK, THEY MUST RETURN HOME!
