10 people referred for arrest in operation targeting CHP municipalities: Allegations of 'links to PKK'

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau has taken a new step as part of an investigation launched into CHP-run municipalities 'to uncover the activities of the PKK/KCK aimed at infiltrating metropolitan municipalities.' The 10 suspects detained in the operation have been referred to the Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for their arrest.

It was noted that the suspects were identified as holding positions in municipalities under titles such as 'Labor Assembly Member,' 'District Assembly Member,' and 'Women's Assembly Member.' Furthermore, the indictment claims that they were actively operating in Istanbul within the structure of the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK).

As the court evaluates the arrest requests, new information regarding the details of the investigation is expected to emerge. The CHP, in previous statements, argued that the operation was conducted for political purposes, emphasizing that the goal was to 'intimidate' the opposition.

Member of the TBMM Justice Commission and Chairman of the CHP High Disciplinary Board Turan Taşkın underlined that they do not find 'dawn raids' appropriate and noted the following regarding the operation:

'Detention is a precautionary measure. Legal rules do not allow for arbitrariness. A dawn raid in this manner is not right.'

Taşkın added that the detained municipal employees were asked whether they had any ties to structures known as the HDK in 2022. According to Taşkın's statements, the CHP members, who have been in custody for 2 days, were questioned by the Prosecutor's Office regarding whether they had links to the PKK/PYD.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF THOSE DETAINED?

Among those detained are Kartal Deputy Mayor C.Y., Ataşehir Deputy Mayor L.G., Üsküdar Municipal Council Member B.K., Sancaktepe Municipal Council Member E.G., Fatih Municipal Council Member G.A., Tuzla Municipal Council Member H.Ö., Adalar Municipal Council Member N.A., Şişli Municipal Council Member S.G., Beyoğlu Municipal Council Member T.Ş., and I.P., who was determined to have connections with the Beyoğlu Municipality.

A large-scale operation is being carried out as part of the investigation to expose the organization's structure within the municipalities. It is alleged that the suspects supported the organization's efforts to increase its influence in metropolitan cities under the name of "city consensus."

CITY CONSENSUS INVESTIGATION

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau carried out an operation based on allegations that the PKK/KCK was infiltrating and operating within municipalities. As part of the operation, 10 people were detained on Tuesday, February 11.

In a statement made by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the suspects supported the activities carried out by the PKK/KCK under the name of "city consensus."

The statement expressed the following:

'The city consensus formula is an organizational system above the DEM Party, and it has been determined that the structures carrying out work specifically on organization (DBP, HDK) are the institutions that develop and manage the organization's grassroots organization.'
