17-year-old missing persons case solved in Diyarbakır: It was an honor killing

The fate of Arif Uğurlu and Ceylan Aktepe, who went missing in the Çınar district of Diyarbakır in 2009, has been resolved after years of uncertainty. The file, which had remained on the shelves as an unsolved case since that date, was re-examined as part of the recent efforts of the Diyarbakır Provincial Gendarmerie Command.

The new investigation launched to find the missing persons yielded significant results. The veil of secrecy surrounding the murders was lifted through the coordinated work of a special team of experts, following technical and physical surveillance. Investigations determined that Ceylan Aktepe’s father-in-law, Ö.A., committed the murder with an “honor” motive.

The team of experts, consisting of personnel from the Public Order, JASAT, Criminal, Cyber, and Intelligence branches, investigated the file in detail. Within the scope of the investigation, coordinated by the prosecutor's office, 10 suspects were identified.

Simultaneous operations were carried out in the Çınar and Bağlar districts of Diyarbakır, as well as in the Derik district of Mardin, the central district of Şırnak, and the Şarkışla district of Sivas. All 10 wanted individuals were apprehended and taken into custody during raids on the identified addresses.

Among the suspects referred to the courthouse, Ö.A., who was revealed to be Ceylan Aktepe’s father-in-law, was arrested on charges of “murder with honor motive” and sent to the Diyarbakır T-Type Closed Penal Institution. The other 9 suspects taken into custody as part of the investigation were released under judicial control conditions.
