WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The process began after Mayor Sinem Dedetaş was suspended from office following her arrest. In the first election, CHP candidate Çetinkaya received 22 votes, while the AKP candidate remained at 18 votes.

Upon the AKP's objection, the court decided on August 25 to repeat the election on the grounds that there were irregularities and that election security had been violated. In the second election held on September 6, the absolute majority could not be reached as YENİ Party and CHP council members did not attend the meeting; the election was postponed to September 8 at 09:00.

The AKP-MHP group has 21 members in the Üsküdar Municipal Council, while the CHP and YENİ Party have a total of 23 members. However, it is stated that 21 members from each side can cast their votes due to the arrest of two CHP members.

It was stated that CHP members Amine Cansu Çelik and Ekrem Baki were arrested before the election, and that four CHP council members had recently switched to the AKP. The YENİ Party and CHP district presidencies announced in a joint press conference yesterday that they would act together in the election.
