Appointed rector shows no signs of stopping: 81 'parachute' appointments at Boğaziçi University

Boğaziçi University Involved Alumni group announced that 17 new appointments have been made to Boğaziçi University by the appointed administration. According to the announced list, 10 appointments were made to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, 2 to the Faculty of Education, and one each to the faculties of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering, and Law, as well as the institutes of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Environmental Sciences.

According to the report by Cumhuriyet, with these latest appointments, a total of 81 new assignments have been made at Boğaziçi University during the tenure of appointed rector Prof. Dr. Naci İnci.

Commenting on the matter, Boğaziçi University Department of Political Science and International Relations faculty member Prof. Dr. Mine Eder pointed out that these top-down, "parachute" appointments also damage the professional reputation of the individuals being appointed.

Eder stated that those arriving via "parachute" appointments are appointed without going through any academic process.

"THEY SUDDENLY BECOME OUR COLLEAGUES WITHOUT US KNOWING"

Eder said the following regarding the issue:

"This is a situation that continues constantly. What we mean by parachute is this: These appointments are neither asked of the departments nor is the opinion received from the departments taken into account. The decision to appoint these people does not pass through the faculty administrative boards. They suddenly become your colleagues without you having any knowledge whatsoever. There is such an absurd situation at hand. The reason these people are called parachutes is this. These individuals do not make any academic presentations to their colleagues, they do not meet anyone. They arrive through top-down decisions via job postings. Most of the time, these are postings tailored to specific individuals; we are constantly filing lawsuits against these as well. This is a very sad situation. In the academic community, everyone knows everyone. These young friends are actually tarnishing their own careers with these appointments."
