Breaking News: 5 detained in armed attack on Fenerbahçe bus!

The investigation into the armed attack on the bus carrying the Fenerbahçe football team in Trabzon on April 4, 2015, has been reopened after 11 years. Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek announced that 5 suspects have been detained in line with findings obtained from new examinations conducted within the scope of the file.

In a statement on his social media account, Gürlek stated that the attack on the Fenerbahçe bus was re-examined within the scope of the work of the Cold Case Investigation Department established within the Ministry. Stating that the evidence in the file was re-evaluated using new technological capabilities and current examination methods, Gürlek noted that the investigation is being conducted by the Trabzon Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

In line with the evidence and findings obtained from new HTS and base station analyses carried out within the scope of the investigation, an operation was launched by the Trabzon Provincial Police Department teams this morning against 5 suspects. While search and seizure operations were carried out at the suspects' addresses, it was reported that judicial proceedings have been initiated against the detained suspects.

Gürlek's statement is as follows:

"Under the leadership of our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, we continue our efforts with determination to shed light on events that have left a scar on our nation's conscience and to ensure that justice is fully served.

The armed attack on the bus carrying the Fenerbahçe Sports Club football team in Trabzon on April 4, 2015, remains in our memory. This attack, in which the bus driver was seriously injured and the players and club officials narrowly escaped great danger, has remained a scar on our nation's conscience.

The file has been taken up again within the scope of the work of our Cold Case Investigation Department, which we established within our Ministry's General Directorate of Criminal Affairs; all evidence has been re-evaluated using new technological capabilities and current examination methods.

In line with the evidence and findings obtained from the new HTS and base station analyses conducted within the scope of the investigation carried out by our Trabzon Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, an operation was carried out by our Trabzon Provincial Police Department this morning against 5 suspects; search and seizure operations were conducted at the suspects' addresses and the necessary judicial proceedings were initiated.

The sole purpose of this investigation is to reveal the person or persons behind this heinous attack carried out 11 years ago with concrete evidence. Regardless of which team, which athlete, or which fan group it is directed at, our stance against violence in sports is clear.

On this occasion, I would like to thank our General Directorate of Criminal Affairs, especially our Cold Case Investigation Department, our Trabzon Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which meticulously conducted the investigation, our assigned public prosecutors, our Trabzon Provincial Police Department, and all public officials who contributed.

We will follow the process to the end to clarify the questions that the Turkish football community and our nation have been waiting for answers to for years. We will not allow any person or community to be unfairly accused, nor will we allow any attack to remain unsolved."
