Captain's statement in Kyrenia ship disaster revealed

8 people lost their lives and 241 were rescued on the "Filo Jet," a high-speed passenger hydrofoil that sank off the coast of Kyrenia. While search and rescue efforts continue for 18 people who were on board, the court process has begun for the captain, crew, and company employees detained in connection with the accident.

CAPTAIN AND CREW IN COURT

The captain of the ship, which was operating between Kyrenia Port and Taşucu Port in Mersin, M.Ö., along with crew members M.S, M.G, S.E, V.H, R.İ, Z.Ö., and K.K., as well as company employee A.Ö., were brought before the Kyrenia District Court.

Following identification, the judge requested that 7 other individuals sought for the crime of "causing death through negligence" also be brought to court. It was decided that the hearing would resume at 11:30 AM once these individuals were brought to the courthouse.

CAPTAIN'S DEFENSE REVEALED

In their statements to the court, the captain and crew argued that the accident began due to the impact of the waves. The statements indicated that the front part of the ship broke off due to the waves, causing the vessel to capsize.

The captain and crew further stated that according to meteorological data, there were no issues at the start of the voyage, and that the ship's certification was in order, possessing all necessary permits from both navigational and administrative perspectives.

COURT ORDERS TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

The court requested the collection of technical data to determine the causes of the accident. The court also decided to hear witnesses and requested an investigation into whether a separate inquiry is being conducted regarding the incident in Turkey.

It was also decided that the remaining documents in the file should be completed.

SHIP SANK WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RETURN TO PORT

The incident occurred shortly after the "Filo Jet" departed from Kyrenia Port bound for Taşucu Port.

The high-speed passenger hydrofoil began taking on water from its front section shortly after the voyage began. It was stated that the ship capsized while attempting a maneuver to return to Kyrenia Port.

Following the accident, rescue and search operations for missing persons were launched in the area. Search and rescue activities are still ongoing.
