Operation conducted on 6 law firms and 20 companies: Billions of liras swindled using data of traffic accident victims!

A simultaneous operation was launched in four provinces as part of an investigation into allegations that the personal data of citizens involved in traffic accidents were obtained through illegal means and transferred to certain law firms and damage consultancy companies.

Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek announced that search and detention operations were conducted at 6 law firms and 20 companies in Istanbul, Ankara, Sakarya, and Gaziantep, under the coordination of the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Special Investigation Bureau and carried out by the Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command.

The investigation alleges that after obtaining the information of individuals who had been in traffic accidents, these people were contacted and powers of attorney were secured. According to the information released, findings indicate that powers of attorney were obtained from 253 thousand people through persistent calls and misleading statements, and that 15.6 billion liras in illicit gains were generated through this method.

It was stated that an investigation has been initiated against 825 people within the scope of the case. Reports from the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) and the Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency (SEDDK) were also taken into account during the examinations.

The MASAK and SEDDK examinations reportedly identified allegations of unusual money transfers made to certain law enforcement officers, arbitration referees, insurance company employees, insurance agents, adjusters, auto body and paint technicians, and service staff.

The statement emphasized that the investigation is ongoing against the exploitation of the grievances experienced by citizens following traffic accidents and the unlawful use of personal data.
