Critical move after 8 years: Detention orders issued in the case of Dorukhan Büyükışık, found dead at a construction site

A significant development has occurred in the case of Dorukhan Büyükışık, who was found dead at a construction site in the Narlıdere district of İzmir in 2018. Action was taken following the emergence of new evidence in the investigation, which has been on the public agenda for years.

Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek announced that detention orders have been issued for 26 suspects as part of the ongoing investigation. Simultaneous operations were carried out in the early hours of the morning across 9 provinces, centered in İzmir.

NEW EVIDENCE REINVIGORATES THE INVESTIGATION

Minister Gürlek stated that new findings obtained in the investigation have allowed the case to reach a critical stage. The statement indicated that expert reports, technical examinations, HTS records, and narrowed cell tower analyses, as well as findings regarding the tampering of evidence, were instrumental in expanding the investigation.

Following these developments, detention orders were issued for 26 individuals under the instruction of the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

“WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY EVIDENCE TO BE TAMPERED WITH”

In his statement, Minister of Justice Gürlek noted that efforts to shed light on cold cases are continuing and said the following:

“In line with the strong will demonstrated by our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, we are resolutely pursuing every cold case and mobilizing all our resources to ensure that justice is served.”

Gürlek stated that the investigation is being conducted under the coordination of the Cold Case Investigation Department established within the Ministry of Justice, and drew attention to the work of the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and the İzmir Provincial Gendarmerie Command.

In his statement, he included the following: “We will not allow any file to be covered up, nor will we allow any evidence to be tampered with. No matter how much time passes, we will continue to work with all our resources to uncover the material truth and ensure that justice is served.”

DORUKHAN BÜYÜKIŞIK WAS FOUND DEAD AT A CONSTRUCTION SITE IN 2018

Dorukhan Büyükışık, the son of retired Major General Ethem Büyükışık, was found dead at a construction site in Narlıdere, İzmir, in 2018.

In the initial records prepared after the incident, the cause of death was assessed as “falling from a height.” However, the family objected, claiming the incident was a murder, and fought for a long time to have the investigation reopened.

LAWSUITS HAD BEEN FILED AGAINST POLICE OFFICERS

During the investigations conducted throughout the inquiry process, a lawsuit had been filed against eight police officers who were on duty at the scene.

Prosecutorial examinations determined that the police officers had not properly examined the security camera footage despite the prosecutor's instructions and had failed to secure a copy of the footage.

Furthermore, it was determined that active cameras were not fully examined and that evidence at the scene was not collected as required.

“INTENTIONAL KILLING” LAWSUIT AGAINST CONSTRUCTION SITE EMPLOYEES

As part of the investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a lawsuit was filed this February against four construction site guards and one construction worker on charges of “intentional killing.”

Following the new operations, the scope of the investigation may expand even further.
