Breaking News: Üsküdar Municipality passes to AKP

Following the process that began after Sinem Dedetaş was suspended from duty, the municipal council in Üsküdar went to the polls again after a court decision to renew the election. In the fourth round of the deputy mayoral election at Üsküdar Municipality, the AKP-MHP candidate Dündar Ziya Gültekin won the election with 23 votes. The CHP-YENİ Party candidate Sibel Tan Çetinkaya remained at 19 votes. With this result, Üsküdar Municipality, which was won by the CHP in the March 31, 2024 local elections, has passed to the AKP.

Breaking News: Üsküdar Municipality passes to AKP

The renewed election for deputy mayor at Üsküdar Municipality is being held today. The AKP's objection to the election, which CHP candidate Sibel Tan Çetinkaya won with 22 votes on August 5, was accepted, and the court decided to renew the election. The first round of voting has begun in the council.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The process began with the suspension of Mayor Sinem Dedetaş following her arrest. In the first election, CHP candidate Çetinkaya received 22 votes, while the AKP candidate remained at 18 votes.

Upon the AKP's objection, the court decided on August 25 to renew the election on the grounds that there were irregularities and that election security had been violated. In the second election held on September 6, the absolute majority could not be reached as YENİ Party and CHP council members did not attend the meeting; the election was postponed to September 8 at 09:00.

The Üsküdar Municipal Council has 21 members from the AKP-MHP group and a total of 23 members from the CHP and YENİ Party. However, it is stated that 21 members from each side can vote due to the arrest of two CHP members.

Before the election, it was stated that CHP members Amine Cansu Çelik and Ekrem Baki had been arrested, and that four CHP council members had recently switched to the AKP. The YENİ Party and CHP district presidencies announced in a joint press conference yesterday that they would act together in the election.
