New oversight plan for social media from the government

It has been alleged that new regulatory topics regarding social media were discussed at the AKP Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK) meeting, which was held recently under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

According to information shared regarding the meeting, Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş gave a presentation to the board members on the subjects of threat elements found on social media and children being dragged into crime.

According to the report in the Türkiye newspaper, which is known for its proximity to the government, it was proposed that a supreme board similar to the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), which oversees radio and television broadcasts, be established for social media to combat drug use, violent content, and posts linked to terrorism.

It was reported that the AKP MKYK members who voiced the proposal stated that the planned structure should serve as the "oversight body for new digital media."

It was noted that some MKYK members who spoke at the meeting made assessments that the obligations imposed on social media platforms to date have not produced the desired results in practice.
