'If you don't want your wife to be a widow, get out' threat
In Istanbul's Pendik district, shop owner Osman Kızıltaş had made headlines with the threat, "If you don't want your wife to be a widow and your children to be orphans, get out." Kızıltaş has since backtracked.
According to allegations, Osman Kızıltaş, the owner of a shop located in the Ertuğrulgazi neighborhood, demanded 50,000 TL in rent from his tenant. When the tenant requested that the current rent of 10,000 TL be increased by 50 percent to 15,000 TL, an argument broke out between them. Kızıltaş then told his tenant, "If you don't want your wife to be a widow and your children to be orphans, get out." Kızıltaş has since retracted his words.
"I WILL PRAY FOR HIM IF HE MOVES OUT"
Commenting on the incident, Kızıltaş said, "If he moves out, I won't ask for the first month's rent, which is 50,000 lira. We won't ask for the second month's rent either. We will also help him move. Let our friendship remain, we want him to leave this way. If he moves out, I will pray for him."
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to allegations, Osman Kızıltaş, the owner of a shop located in the Ertuğrulgazi neighborhood, demanded 50,000 TL in rent from his tenant.
The tenant requested that the current rent of 10,000 TL be increased by 50 percent to 15,000 TL. During the argument that ensued between the shop owner, who wanted the tenant to leave if the rent was not 50,000 TL, and the tenant, the shop owner made threats.
Kızıltaş, who claimed that his tenant of 8 years did not make regular payments and paid lower than market value for the rent, alleged that he wanted the tenant to vacate the shop because he wanted to use it himself, and that the tenant had told him, 'You will give me 200,000 TL, otherwise I won't leave the shop.'
Shop owner Kızıltaş also stated that if the tenant vacated the shop, he would not collect two months' rent and would help with the moving process.
"WE WILL NOT COLLECT TWO MONTHS' RENT, WE WILL HELP HIM MOVE"
Kızıltaş's statement is as follows:
“This is my tenant of 8 years. He makes payments as he sees fit. In 2022, he paid 6,250. We tolerated it, we didn't say anything, we begged and pleaded; in 2023, he paid 10,000 lira. The shop's rent was 30,000 lira at that time. We reached 2024, I called him and made a request. I explained the situation, he didn't listen to me and made me angry. He said, ‘You will give me 200,000 TL, otherwise I won't leave; if you take it to court, it will take 3 and a half years.’ I got angry and used those words at that moment. They were words that didn't suit me; I said them because I was angry. I apologize for this. I want my tenant to leave. If he moves out, I won't ask for the first month's rent, which is 50,000 lira. We won't ask for the second month's rent either. We will also help him move. Let our friendship remain, we want him to leave this way. If he moves out, I will pray for him. I also apologize to him. At that moment, I lost my temper and said, ‘Whatever he does, let him do it.’ We will convince him. We will not collect two months' rent. We will also help him move. We want to use it ourselves. We want to use our own place ourselves.”
