The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement regarding an attempt by a French-flagged vessel to conduct unauthorized marine scientific research activities on the Turkish continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The statement said, "It is observed that a French-flagged vessel intends to carry out an unlawful marine scientific research activity aimed at laying cables without authorization within our continental shelf, the outer limits of which we notified to the United Nations on March 18, 2020.
The unauthorized navigational warnings issued for this purpose by Greece and the GCA have been cancelled by our country. The process regarding the consent that must be obtained from our country in accordance with the established provisions of international maritime law for the portion of the activity that the vessel in question plans to carry out within the limits of our continental shelf has not yet been completed.
Our determination to protect our sovereign rights arising from international law is absolute, and we will continue to adopt an approach based on cooperation, dialogue, and coordination in the region."
