Nuclear waste detected in İzmir: Ministry imposes heavy fines
It has been determined that waste from a former lead factory in the Gaziemir district of İzmir was illegally dumped on a vacant lot in the Torbalı district. Teams from the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality documented this environmental violation during their inspections and reported it to the competent authorities.
The İzmir Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has launched an investigation into the matter. The investigation revealed that the waste removed from the factory in Gaziemir was illegally dumped in an open area in the Yoğurtçular neighborhood of Torbalı instead of being sent to a licensed facility.
Under Article 20 of the Environmental Law, a total administrative fine of 11 million 218 thousand 356 TL was imposed on two excavation companies that illegally dumped the waste. Criminal complaints have been filed against Nerman Hafriyat İnşaat Ltd. Şti. and İzmirim Hafriyat İnşaat Ltd. Şti.
Ministry teams noted that during an inspection conducted on March 7, the waste in question underwent radiation checks and was determined to be below threshold values. It was pointed out that the illegal dumping of the waste poses a serious threat to the environment. The Provincial Directorate teams announced that the identified waste was collected on the same day and sent to a licensed recovery facility.
The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality announced that it will tighten its inspections against environmental violations and take the necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring. Authorities also called on citizens to report such violations.
