Manager Şenol Güneş issued a written statement following his remarks regarding the appointment of Sergen Yalçın as the head coach of the Turkish National Football Team. Güneş noted that his comment, "They did not consult with me," made during an event he attended in Trabzon, was interpreted differently on social media.
Emphasizing that he did not want his words to be evaluated as a reproach, Güneş stated, "My remark, 'They did not consult with me,' was a direct answer to the question posed; it did not contain any expectations, resentment, or complaints. Decisions regarding the national team are made by the relevant institutions and authorities. The responsibility for these decisions also belongs to them."
Güneş wished Sergen Yalçın success in his new role, noting that the success of the national team is a common wish for everyone. The experienced manager stated that he felt the need to inform the public so that his words would not be interpreted in a different sense.
A day earlier, Şenol Güneş had met with students at the İbrahim Erdemoğlu Sports High School in Trabzon. Responding to a question there regarding the national team coaching process, Güneş had said that he was not consulted, that Sergen Yalçın had been appointed to the position, and that decisions were made by the authorized institutions.
In the same assessment, Güneş had stated that success or failure could not be explained by a single reason, adding that they want whoever takes the job to be successful as the head coach of the national team.
