Obesity alarm in Turkey: 1 in 3 people is overweight

More than one million people participated in the Ministry of Health's "Learn Your Ideal Weight, Live Healthily" campaign in two weeks. It was determined that the measurement results of 673 thousand 25 of those whose height and weight were measured were not in the "normal range" according to the body mass index classification. 28.2 percent of those who participated in the campaign were found to be in the 'obesity' range.

MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN ON THE STREET

Within the scope of the campaign implemented by the Ministry across the country to raise awareness about being overweight and to combat it effectively, the height and weight of 1 million 143 thousand 189 people were measured across Turkey between May 10-23.

In the first two weeks of the campaign, it was observed that the measurement results of 673 thousand 25 of the 1 million 143 thousand 189 people whose height and weight were measured were not in the "normal" range according to the body mass index classification.

28.2 PERCENT OF PARTICIPANTS ARE IN THE OBESITY RANGE

In the second week of the campaign, covering the dates of May 17-23, 2025, the height and weight of a total of 591 thousand 209 people, 281 thousand 940 of whom were men and 309 thousand 269 of whom were women, were measured.

As a result of the measurements, the BMI of the people participating in the campaign was determined. In the analysis based on this data, according to the body mass index classification, it was observed that 4.2 percent of the people participating in the campaign were underweight, 31.8 percent were normal, 35.8 percent were overweight, and 28.2 percent were within the obesity limits.

OVERWEIGHT RATE IS HIGHER IN MEN, OBESITY RATE IS HIGHER IN WOMEN

The data from the second week of the campaign revealed that the rate of being overweight in men was 41.9 percent, which is higher than the rate of being overweight in women at 30.3 percent, while the obesity rate in women was 32.1 percent, exceeding the obesity rate in men at 23.8 percent.
