President approves: TAF's mission in Lebanon extended

The Presidency has submitted a memorandum to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to extend the mission of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for another year.

The memorandum, bearing the signature of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was submitted in accordance with UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1701, adopted on August 11, 2006.

The memorandum recalled that the TBMM, by its decision on September 5, 2006, authorized Turkey to participate in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon with TAF elements for a period of 1 year, and that this period was most recently extended for 1 year starting from October 31, 2023.

Pointing to the UNSC's decision to extend UNIFIL's mandate until August 31, 2025, the memorandum requested that Turkey's contribution to UNIFIL continue for another year starting from October 31, 2024, taking into account the ongoing conflicts and security threats in the region.

Under the scope of the memorandum, the number of TAF elements and the scope of their duties will be determined by the Presidency, and necessary arrangements will be made accordingly. The final decision regarding the extension of the mission will be finalized with the approval of the TBMM.
