Mayor Şeniz Doğan, her husband Mehmet Ali Doğan, municipal staff, and some representatives of a construction firm, who were detained as part of an investigation into Merkezefendi Municipality, were referred to the courthouse this morning.
Following prosecutor interrogations that lasted until the evening hours, Mayor Şeniz Doğan, her husband Mehmet Ali Doğan, and several others were referred to court with a request for trial under arrest.
YENİ Party members first gathered at Adalet Park. After waiting there for a while, the large group then gathered in front of the courthouse to show their support for Mayor Doğan.
"The will of Merkezefendi is being usurped"
YENİ Party Provincial Chair Ali Osman Horzum argued that the investigation was being conducted with political motives and claimed that there was no concrete evidence in the file. Reminding that Şeniz Doğan was elected with 60 percent of the vote in the 2024 local elections, Horzum asserted that the ongoing process targeted not only the mayor but also the will of the voters.
Provincial Chair Horzum stated, "The public used its will in favor of Mayor Şeniz, but what is being usurped here is not only the freedom of Mayor Şeniz and her colleagues, but also the will of Merkezefendi. Mayor Şeniz is not alone. As a party and as individuals, we have always stood for rights, law, and justice. Let those who commit this oppression today not forget that they will also need this justice tomorrow."
Criticizing the prosecution process, Horzum added, "We have never been afraid to give a statement, nor have we ever been afraid of being tried. We have never seen anyone as above the law. We only asked for one thing: a fair trial. We will never forget these days. We will hold those who conducted this process accountable together."
