Denial from the Communications Directorate: Claims that the '25 percent rent cap' is being lifted do not reflect the truth

A statement from the Republic of Türkiye Communications Directorate's Center for Combating Disinformation noted that the claim that 'Minister Şimşek announced that the 25 percent rent increase cap will be lifted' is not true and contains 'manipulation'.

The statement noted that Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek stated that the cap on residential rent increases would be reviewed.

The statement is as follows:

“The claim appearing in some media outlets that ‘Minister Şimşek announced that the 25 percent rent increase cap will be lifted’ contains manipulation. Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek met with representatives of the business and finance world in a closed-door meeting. In response to a question regarding the regulation that limits rent increases in residential leases to 25 percent and is set to expire on July 1, 2024, Minister Şimşek stated that it would be reviewed as the expiration date approaches. As opposed to what is claimed in the news in question, no decision has been made regarding the regulation on residential rent increases, nor has Minister Şimşek made an official public statement.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

As the deepening economic crisis and the unstoppable rise in house rents continue to pit landlords and tenants against each other, it was alleged that the 25 percent rent increase cap would be lifted.

Sözcü columnist Nedim Türkmen had claimed that Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek said during a closed-door meeting with the business and finance world that the 25 percent rent increase mandate would be lifted.

In his column, Türkmen had claimed the following:

"Today, I want to share with you the important points I gathered from the answers given by Mr. Şimşek to questions directed at him during a dinner meeting held three days ago with representatives of the business and finance world, which was closed to the press (The notes I will share are information I received from three friends who were present at the meeting)."

Our President has full support for the program we are implementing. Believe it or not. I also cannot make sense of your expectations for the post-election period. This program will continue in the same way after the election; we will implement it with patience and determination.

The regulation that limits the rent increase rate in residential leases to 25 percent and will end on July 1, 2024, will not be needed in the coming period and the term will not be extended.

We are planning practices such as different taxes for a person's first home and second home, and different taxes based on the value of the house."
