In the United States, the ratio of federal public debt to national income rose above the 100 percent level in the 2026 fiscal year, which ended on September 30. According to data previously released by the federal government, public debt stood at 32.2 trillion dollars as of September 30.
With the release of third-quarter growth data, the ratio of federal public debt to gross domestic product was calculated at 100.03 percent. Thus, the ratio has crossed the 100 percent threshold for the first time since 1946.
The public debt-to-GDP ratio was at 99.4 percent at the end of the 2025 fiscal year. The latest realization remained below the 100.6 percent forecast projected by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) in February.
In the US, the debt ratio reached a record level of 106 percent in 1946 due to high borrowing for the financing of World War II. The new data showed that the federal debt burden is approaching its historical peak once again.
