Weekly inspection period for school buses

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) has implemented a new practice for the inspection of school buses. With a directive sent to relevant units and schools by the General Directorate of Support Services, the aim is to ensure that students reach educational institutions under safer conditions.

In the letter sent under the signature of General Director of Support Services Ömür Fatih Karakullukçu, it was stated that two separate forms have been prepared to create uniformity and standards in inspections. One of the forms will be used by education inspectors, and the other by school administrations.

In addition to the inspections currently conducted at least once per academic term by governorate and district governorate commissions, school administrators at transport-hub schools will also conduct weekly checks. The checks will be documented using the “School Bus Inspection Form.”

The forms prepared by schools will be sent to provincial and district national education directorates at the end of the month, along with attendance records. A certified copy of the forms will be kept at the school administrations.

During the weekly inspections, the age, cleanliness, and ventilation status of the bus; whether the driver possesses the necessary authorization documents; and whether the vehicle displays the “OKUL TAŞITI” (SCHOOL VEHICLE) sign and the red “DUR” (STOP) light in accordance with standards will be checked.

Ensuring that vehicles do not exceed their legal passenger capacity, that students use seat belts, and that a traffic kit, first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher with an unexpired shelf life are present will also be among the inspection criteria.

It will also be checked whether the attendant personnel are wearing reflective vests with the “REHBER” (ATTENDANT) label in accordance with the TS EN ISO 20471 standard and whether student tracking and management systems are actively working in the vehicles. Deficiencies identified during the inspections will be noted in the explanations section of the form and reported to the relevant authorities.
