Forest fire that started in Şarköy spreads to Çanakkale

A forest fire that broke out yesterday in the Kocaali area of Tekirdağ's Şarköy district spread rapidly, reaching agricultural lands and residential areas. The fire, which could not be brought under control due to strong winds, reached the borders of the Gelibolu district of Çanakkale during the night hours.

The fire flared up again in the early hours of the morning as the wind intensified once more. The flames increased in intensity in the direction of Kavakköy in the Gelibolu district. As the fire reached the Çanakkale-Malkara highway, traffic at the Kavakköy junction was temporarily halted, and drivers were directed to alternative routes.

Intervention against the fire is being carried out intensively both from the air and on the ground. Operations coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry involve 15 aircraft, 19 helicopters, 76 water tenders, 4 pieces of heavy equipment, and 509 personnel.

While firefighting efforts are occasionally hindered by strong winds in the region, authorities are warning citizens not to approach dangerous areas. The Çanakkale Governor's Office stated that evacuation plans could be put into effect depending on developments.
