Fatih Altaylı's comment that will anger Beşiktaş fans: 'He positioned them below Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray'
Journalist Fatih Altaylı, while evaluating the resignation crisis at Beşiktaş, criticized the fact that the team's stadium and jersey main sponsors belong to companies of Koç Holding, where Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç also serves on the board of directors.
Beşiktaş announced that Hasan Arat has resigned from his position as chairman and member of the board of Beşiktaş Futbol AŞ, and that Hüseyin Yücel has been appointed in his place.
Criticizing the sponsorship moves of the Beşiktaş management, Altaylı stated that by accepting sponsorships from Koç Holding companies—where Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç is also a board member—the club has positioned itself in the wrong place.
The relevant section from Altaylı's article is as follows:
POSITIONED BELOW FENERBAHÇE AND GALATASARAY
The consecutive unsuccessful results at Beşiktaş have caused turmoil in the management. To be honest, I was surprised too.
At the beginning of the season, if you had asked me who my favorite was, I would have said Beşiktaş. They had wiped the floor with last year's champion Galatasaray by scoring 5 goals in the first cup match of the year, added many important players to their squad, and found a coach who made the team play well.
President Hasan Arat was the one who came from a sports background and knew sports the best among all the presidents. Afterward, unexpectedly poor results began to arrive, and the team drifted away from the championship race.
Yesterday, President Hasan Arat stepped down as the chairman of the board of the company that owns the club's football team. He will continue as the president of the association. As the club president, he will retain the authority to appoint the board of directors for the club's company.
So why did Beşiktaş end up like this...
The Beşiktaş management positioned the club incorrectly. Today, Beşiktaş is one of the three big clubs in Istanbul. It is a rival to Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. However, the management made a tactical error and positioned the club below Fenerbahçe. The naming rights for the club's stadium were given to the company of the Fenerbahçe Club President. The sponsor on the jersey was also the company of the Fenerbahçe Club President.
That wasn't enough; the Beşiktaş management made a nonsensical statement like, 'Koç was going to give 3 million dollars for the jersey. Ali Koç said let's make it 3.5, but we accepted 3 so as not to invalidate Rahmi Bey's word.' You might say, 'Rahmi Bey has been a Beşiktaş fan since the beginning and has always supported them.' True. He did.
But back then, Rahmi Bey was not the father of the Fenerbahçe President.
And because of this, the resulting position placed Beşiktaş in a spot below Fenerbahçe and, naturally, below Galatasaray as well.
It caused the community to feel bad, even if unintentionally.
Yet, there were names like Hüsnü Özyeğin, Tuncay Özilhan, Zafer Yıldırım, and Serdar Bilgili in Beşiktaş.
At the very least, during this period, some of the sponsorships could have been distributed among these names instead of all of them inevitably being identified with Koç Holding and Ali Koç.
Of course, this is not the only reason I mentioned, but one should never ignore the morale factor in sports.
