Exhumation performed: Lethal substance found in Kaşif Kozinoğlu's grave

New findings have emerged in the investigation into the 2011 death of former MIT member Kaşif Kozinoğlu at Silivri Prison. According to a report by Sabah, antimony was found in samples examined at the Council of Forensic Medicine following the exhumation performed on September 12, 2026.

KOZİNOĞLU'S GRAVE OPENED AFTER 15 YEARS

Kozinoğlu's death was officially recorded as a heart attack at the time. Following the exhumation ordered by the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, numerous samples including hair, nails, tissue, bone, and shroud were collected from the remains. It was reported that DNA analysis confirmed with high probability that the remains belonged to Kozinoğlu.

ANTIMONY DETECTED IN HAIR AND NAIL SAMPLES

The report stated that according to the October 19, 2026, laboratory report from the Council of Forensic Medicine's Morgue Specialization Department, antimony—which was noted as not being present in the grave soil—was detected at high levels in the hair and nail samples. It was noted that while no cyanide or narcotics were found in toxicological screenings, some heavy metals were detected in addition to antimony.

EFFECTS OF ANTIMONY ON THE BODY DRAW ATTENTION

It is known that antimony shows similarities to arsenic in its chemical properties and can cause severe effects on the heart, liver, and kidneys in cases of high-level exposure. The file also reportedly includes an evaluation of claims that Kozinoğlu had consumed coffee in prison shortly before his death.

9 SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN THE INVESTIGATION

It was reported that judicial proceedings have been initiated against 30 people to date as part of the investigation, and 9 suspects, including the then-Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor Ali İşgören and former MIT member Enver Altaylı, have been arrested. Additionally, an arrest warrant has been issued for one civil servant.

FINAL REPORT ON CAUSE OF DEATH PENDING

The final assessment regarding the cause of Kozinoğlu's death is expected to be made by the Council of Forensic Medicine. The new findings in the investigation have brought the death case, which has been debated for years, back to the agenda of the judiciary and the public.
