Turkey tops the list of applications to the ECHR

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has published its annual report containing statistics for 2024. According to the report, Turkey was the country with the highest number of applications to the ECHR, with 21,600. This figure represents the highest proportion among the total of 60,350 cases pending before the Court.

Turkey was followed by Russia with 8,150 applications and Ukraine with 7,700, while Romania (3,850) and Greece (2,600) also ranked in the top tier. The report stated that approximately three-quarters of the pending applications belong to these five countries.

Throughout 2024, the ECHR issued decisions on more than 36,800 applications. Of these decisions, 10,241 were concluded by committees of three judges, and 22,200 were concluded by single-judge formations.

DECLINE IN THE NUMBER OF CASES

The report also emphasized that there has been a decline in the number of cases pending before the ECHR compared to previous years. A decrease of 8,100 applications was recorded compared to the end of 2023, and 14,300 compared to 2022. However, it was stated that 80 percent of the approximately 13,400 priority cases pending come from Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Romania, and Greece.
