Following the backlash, Yılmaz issued a statement, explaining that he made the post because he has vision loss in one eye. Sarıkaya's photo, in which she posed with crossed eyes, was perceived as a retaliation against Cem Yılmaz.

For some reason, they found it with me. Being truly stupid is a great privilege, enjoy it. I will not engage; this is your life, I have work to do."
