Hunger strike in Atakum ends, but the vigil will continue

The hunger strike, which Atakum Municipality workers had been maintaining for 8 days, has ended after a portion of their outstanding wages was deposited into their accounts. The workers announced that they would continue their vigil in the municipal courtyard until all their dues are paid and a transparent payment schedule is announced.

Fatma Ayyıldız Sayım read the press statement on behalf of Workers' Solidarity at the resistance tent set up in the municipal courtyard. Sayım stated that their primary demands are the payment of all workers' outstanding wages and the sharing of a payment program with both the workers and the public.

Sayım said, "As of this point, on the 11th day of our resistance and the 8th day of our hunger strike, we announce to the entire public that a portion of our outstanding wages has been deposited into our accounts."

Announcing that they were ending the hunger strike following this development, Sayım expressed that they were aware of the anxiety the action had caused for the workers and their families. Sayım stated, "We want to share with the entire public that we are ending our hunger strike with a real achievement as a result of our first gain."

Emphasizing that the end of the hunger strike does not mean the end of the resistance, Sayım said they found the work stoppage decision taken by the Genel-İş Union, which is authorized at Atakum Municipality, to be positive and that they support this action.

Stating that the vigil will continue, Sayım said, "We also want to declare that we will not end our vigil action and will not remove the resistance tent we set up in the Atakum Municipality courtyard until our demands are met."
