AKP deputy's remarks: 'Our sacred values are our Prophet and our President'
A speech delivered by AKP Tekirdağ Deputy Mestan Özcan in Parliament has sparked criticism due to his remarks regarding the Prophet and the President.
In the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), remarks made by AKP Tekirdağ Deputy Mestan Özcan, stating, "We are a faithful nation; our sacred values, our principles, our Prophet, and our President are our most sensitive points," have sparked controversy. Referring to recent events, Özcan stated that insults directed at religious and political values are unacceptable.
In his speech, Özcan said: "In recent days, two ugly incidents have occurred that have deeply wounded the conscience of our nation; on one hand, the vile insults made against our Prophet by a humor magazine, and on the other, the vulgar and ugly expressions directed at our President last night in Saraçhane. We are a faithful nation; our sacred values, our principles, our Prophet, and our President are our most sensitive points. Regardless of our political views or differences in thought, no one has the right to insult our religious values or the state leaders elected by our nation."
REACTIONS AND DEMANDS FOR CORRECTION
İYİ Party Group Deputy Chairman Buğra Kavuncu reacted to Özcan's words, stating, "In a period where there is such sensitivity, and at a time when we mention that the Prophet must be respected, this is unacceptable," and demanded that Özcan make a correction.
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır criticized Özcan's remarks by saying, "Can there be a mentality that equates a politician with our Prophet, for a deputy?" and stated that the AK Party group should protest this situation.
REACTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Yeni Yol Group Deputy Chairman Mehmet Emin Ekmen also criticized Özcan's words in a post on social media, stating, "This shameful speech was made in the TBMM today. When the owner of these words, who equates and mentions the Prophet with the President, is an AK Party deputy, unfortunately, many people are blind, deaf, and dumb."
Özcan's speech caused a wide stir in Parliament and on social media, with deputies from various political parties expressing their reactions to these words.
