Akşehir Mayor Ahmet Nuri Köksal and 14 council members resign from CHP
In Akşehir, Konya, Mayor Ahmet Nuri Köksal and 14 municipal council members have announced they are leaving the CHP and will continue their duties as independents.
A mass resignation decision that has dominated the local political agenda in the Akşehir district of Konya has been announced. Dr. Ahmet Nuri Köksal, who was elected Mayor of Akşehir from the CHP in the March 31, 2024 local elections, and 14 CHP municipal council members have left their party.
Speaking at the announcement held in the Akşehir Municipality Council Meeting Hall, Köksal stated that the decision was taken with a common will. Expressing that they will continue their duties independently from now on, Köksal said, "We will continue our path as independents."
Köksal stated that their local governance approach is centered on the principle of being "the mayor for everyone, the municipality for everyone." Noting that they received support from citizens of different political views in the March 31 elections, Köksal stated that they had formed an "Akşehir alliance" during the election process.
Reminding that they came to office with approximately 43 percent of the vote in the election they entered under the CHP umbrella, Köksal emphasized that they did not make party distinctions in municipal services. Köksal noted that they would continue to work for Akşehir following the resignation decision.
With the resignation of the mayor and 14 council members, how the political balance in the Akşehir Municipality will take shape will become clear in the coming period.
