Commission debate during Mecca Agreement talks: Procedural objection from Çakırözer

During the commission process of the Mecca Agreement in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), a procedural debate arose regarding which committee should review the agreement.

According to a social media post by journalist Murat Yetkin, during the deliberations in the TBMM Foreign Affairs Committee, Utku Çakırözer of the New Party told Committee Chairman Fuat Oktay that the defense agreement should first be addressed by the National Defense Committee, which serves as a secondary committee.

As reported in the post, Oktay stated that his own view was in line with this, but that the National Defense Committee had expressed the opinion that there was no need for them to review the agreement.

Following this, it was noted that the discussions regarding the defense agreement began to be held solely in the TBMM Foreign Affairs Committee. The debate over the process highlighted the issues of committee authority and procedure during the parliamentary evaluation stage of the agreement.
