Is Silivri Municipality switching to the AKP?

Rumors behind the scenes suggesting that the CHP-run Silivri Municipality could switch to the AK Party have been brought back to the political agenda.

Speaking on a Habertürk broadcast, Türker Akıncı stated that intense allegations regarding Silivri have been voiced in the local press, particularly over the last week.

According to the allegations, it is being discussed that some CHP municipal council members, acting in coordination with Silivri Deputy Mayor Yalçın Ekici, could resign and join the AK Party. Akıncı reported that the local press has written about "interesting developments" taking place in the district during the week and that there have been some contacts with AK Party members.

HE ASKED THE AK PARTY PROVINCIAL CHAIR

Akıncı stated that he personally asked AK Party Istanbul Provincial Chair Abdullah Özdemir about the Silivri claim. According to his account, Özdemir stated that there is no such situation for Silivri at this stage. However, Akıncı emphasized that political balances can shift, reminding that the district also held significance for the MHP in the past.

Akıncı said that it is not only Silivri being discussed behind the scenes in Istanbul, but other districts as well. Stating that the objection process regarding Eyüpsultan Municipality should be followed, Akıncı also shared insider information that the probability of a district municipality on the Anatolian Side joining the AK Party has increased.

The municipal administration in Silivri changed following the arrest of Bora Balcıoğlu. Balcıoğlu was arrested on June 16, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation; CHP member Yalçın Ekici subsequently took office as the deputy mayor.

It is stated that accusations such as "establishing and managing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes," "bribery," "extortion," "influence peddling," "malfeasance in office," "rigging a tender," "rigging the performance of an act," "causing zoning pollution," and "laundering assets derived from crime" have been directed at Balcıoğlu.
